WINSTON COUNTY - The Winston County Sheriff's Office recently sponsored training for jail ministers (volunteers from local churches who minister in the jail). Dr. Mike Haley was the instructor and he taught nine volunteers and three corrections officers who were available. His teaching points were as follows:
Mike Haley Biography
Mike Haley, Ph.D., has been a corrections practitioner at both the local and state levels for more than 35 years. He has served in various capacities, including Commissioner of Corrections for the State of Alabama, Director of Jail Services for the Alabama Sheriffs’ Association, and Warden of the Mobile County, AL, Metro Jail. He is a P.O.S.T. certified instructor and serves as a trainer for various agencies including the National Sheriffs’ Association, Utah Sheriffs’ Association, Utah Jail Commanders’ Certification Academy, American Jail Association, Alabama Jail Association and Southwest Alabama Police Academy. He provides expert witness services in defense of jails across the nations, with many of those cases involving duty to protect and suicide issues. Mike is a lifetime member of the National Sheriffs’ Association (NSA) and a member of the work group for the creation of the NSA Jail Guidelines and Certification Program. He currently works as Vice President for Quality Correctional Health Care (QCHC), an inmate healthcare provider located in Birmingham, AL.
Mike is a graduate of Mississippi College and the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. He led the development of faith based honor dorms in the Alabama prison system and has participated in jail and prison ministry events in Alabama, Louisiana and Texas.
