The mission of the Winston County Reserve Deputy is to augment and assist the Winston County Sheriff's Office in all its duties, details, and activities.

Reserve Deputies are members of the community in which they live, with the same interests, needs and problems as their neighbors. They have the same responsibilities to participate in community activities and respond to community needs as any other citizen.

Members volunteer their time to support the mission of the Winston County Sheriff's Office. Members will assist the office of the sheriff in the performance of its routine patrol and enforcement duties, as well as the missions during disasters, emergencies, special events and other activities when requested by the Sheriff, or his authorized representative.

When on duty, the reserve deputy shall work under the authority of the sheriff. 
 
Qualifications 
  1. Age: Must be twenty-one (21) years of age. There is no maximum age limit for the Reserve Deputy. 
  2. Prerequisite: Successful completion of the Winston County Sheriff's Office Citizen Academy
  3. Physical: Must be in good health. No physical or mental defects or handicaps, which would prevent you from properly performing law enforcement duties of Reserve Deputy. Pass a pre-employment medical examination. Shall not be taking any medication that would impair their ability to perform normal duties required of a Reserve Deputy. Must pass same physical test standards as Full-Time Deputy. 
  4. Citizenship: Must be a citizen of the United States and a resident in Winston County. 
  5. Character: Must be of good moral character. Must have no felony or serious misdemeanor arrests and never have been convicted of a felony or serious misdemeanor of concern to the Sheriff. 
  6. Education: Must have a high school diploma or equivalent. 
  7. Licensed Driver: Must have a valid Alabama driver license at time of appointment and for continued appointment in this position. A good driving record as determined by the Sheriff. 
  8. Equipment:  Must be willing to purchase and maintain any prescribed equipment including side arm, etc. not provided by the Winston County Sheriff's Office. All issued equipment will remain the property of the Winston County Sheriff's Office. 
  9. Insurance: Must have liability, hospital and accident insurance to cover them while in any county owned vehicle and performing their duties. 
  10. Call to Duty: Must be available for emergency duty. 
  11. Training: Must attend training sessions regularly. Must complete the Winston County Sheriff's basic training for reserves. Must attend training and In-Service classes, including firearms qualification, which will be held periodically to comply with state law and training requirements
Membership shall be in good physical condition and be able to pass the annual physical training mandated by the office of the Sheriff. They shall be of good character and standing in the community and available for training and duty when called.

All new applications will be checked to ascertain that the person is eligible by meeting all the qualifications for membership as a Reserve Deputy. An investigation will be conducted to ascertain if the applicant meets all qualifications. The investigation should include a thorough check of court records, general character, and standing in the community.

Reserves become a valuable asset to our community keeping Winston County a good safe place in which to live, work and play.
